Damaso Marte...you mean the guy that had a 9+ ERA during the season? Yeah, bring him on Hughes had a 9 ERA in the ALDS against the lowly Twinkies. He don't scare me none JR Marte was hurt coming out of ST, hence his trip to the DL. Since coming off the DL, he's been generally very solid, and has a 0.00 ERA in the post. And even with his early struggles, lefties this year are hitting .120/.214/.280.
As for Hughes, talk about small sample size - 2 IP. Look at his work for the year, particularly since he got sent to the pen. __________________ Let me explain. No, there is no time. Let me sum up. |

Re Marte--now who's relying on a small sample size? He threw a total of eight innings in the regular season after coming off the DL (and allowed five earned runs in those eight innings, for what little it's worth).
Marte's been erratic as hell his entire career; you never know which version of him is going to show up. __________________ --Kerry

Hehe, I figured you or one of the other stat-heads would pick up on that, although it's still a 4x bigger sample than Hughes', and it's worth noting that 4 of those runs came in one outing (against the O's, ironically). In the other 14 outings, comprising 7 2/3 IP, he gave up all of 1 run. And you still have to consider how poorly lefties have done against him this year. __________________ Let me explain. I know I picked the Yankee$ to win the ALCS but I'm rooting for the Angels.

Reply with quote | #36 | There is a 90% chance of rain for NYC tomorrow and tomorrow night. If the game gets rained out and you are the Yankee$, do you start Sabathia on Sun. even though that would only be Game 6?
Let's say it goes to Game 7... I'm assuming that would mean a game on Mon. night. Does the World Series still start Tues. as currently scheduled?

Actually, the schedule is for the World Series to start on Wednesday (see below). Tough for Philly at this point. They don't know whether they are headed up to New York on Tuesday or on a cross-country flight to John Wayne Airport (Orange County).
Even if they start him in game 6 on Sunday (if tonight's game is postponed), he's still going to be starting game 1 on extremely short rest (two days - Monday and Tuesday). That would mean if the Yankees wanted to pitch him three games in the series, he's be starting on two, three and three days rest.

If you read my earlier note, you'll see that I stated that the Yankee$ will not be able to use Sabathia in more than 2 games in the World Series if he has to pitch Game 7. That's even more true if there is a rain delay.
I did hear on ESPN this morning that Girardi has stated that Pettite is his Game 6 starter "no matter what" which means Sabathia is his Game 7 starter "no matter what" so that means the Phillies would only see him twice if the ALCS goes 7 games. Given how poorly Pettite pitched in Game 3, I'm thinking a Game 7 is more likely than not. And it's definitely what I'm hoping for.

Reply with quote | #39 | Andy pitched poorly in game 3? Gee, that's news. 6 1/3, 7 hits, 1 BB, 2 Ks, 3 runs. Not his best outing, to be sure, but that qualifies as a quality start, against a good lineup.
As for tonight, what I'm hearing from folks in NYC is that the rain forecast is being dialed back - there may be some drizzle and scattered showers, but it's likely they'll get the game in.

Reply with quote | #40 | If the Yankees win tonight, why wouldn't Girardi use Sabathia in Games 1, 4 and 7?
I do love how it's up to Sabathia and the Yankees offense to disallow Girardi the opportunity to blow any games due to poor bullpen management. Has it always been this bad? __________________ - Michael

Has it always been this bad? No, it seems Joe either got ramped up too much himself (too much caffeine?) or got too full of himself, a la Tony LaRussa. Over the season, he has been MUCH better at managing the pen. I'm hoping that, while he got away with it, barely, in game 2, that he learned his lesson in game 3. __________________ Let me explain. Not that there is any way of knowing it, but I was wondering if being burned in game 3 by the outcome or the media didn't impact his game 5 thinking. In Game 3, he takes out Robertson for reasons as yet unclear. In Game 5, he allows Hughes to pitch, without anyone warming, despite being wild during warmup and wild upon coming in. Given how wild he looked, I don't know why Hughes was allowed to face Morales. (FWIW, I was thinking this while listening to the Angels broadcast.) It seemed like Hughes didn't have it that night and it seemed pretty evident to me. The Yankees lineup and Sabathia need to prevent the opportunity for Girardi to blow another game IMO. __________________ - Michael
